Quick Summary

ABB 3AXD50000429974 motor drive delivers ultra-low harmonic control for water and wastewater pumping applications. Harmonics can drive energy waste, heat, and premature wear on pumps and motors; this drive minimizes THDi to less than 3%, improving efficiency and reliability across your pumping solutions. It aligns with common industry standards, featuring an IP21 enclosure as standard with IP55 and flange-mount options to suit indoor and challenging environments, and is designed for CE-compliant safety and reliability. By combining integrated filtering, sophisticated pump control, and a user-friendly interface, this solution provides lower total cost of ownership for utilities and industrial plants while enabling precise flow management with sensorless operation and energy-factor optimization. Secondary benefits include compatibility with Drive Composer and Hand-Off-Auto control for streamlined operations.

Product Information

Extended Description

3AXD50000429974 ABB: The ACQ580-31 drives deliver innovative pump features for the water and wastewater industry, securing energy efficient flow of water and wastewater in your pumping solutions. The ultra-low harmonic variant provides ultimate harmonic performance, reaching even less than 3 % THDi, and exceeding the requirements set by low harmonic standards and recommendations. The drive includes an active supply unit and integrated low harmonic line filter, meaning there is no need for external filters, multi-pulse arrangements or special transformers. Other features include output voltage boost and power factor correction. This robust and compact wall-mounted drive has built-in pump application functionality such as sensorless flow calculation, multipump control, level control, soft pipe fill, dry run protection, quick ramps and a solution for keeping the impeller of the pump clean. Usability is further enhanced with the intuitive Hand-Off-Auto control panel, the PC tool Drive composer and an optional Bluetooth=C2=AE control panel. The ultra-low harmonic wall-mounted variant comes in IP21 enclosure as standard. Also, IP55 and flange mounting units are available.
Ultra-low harmonic design reduces THDi to <3%, delivering cleaner power, improved motor efficiency, and easier regulatory compliance for municipal and industrial pump stations. This translates to lower energy costs, cooler motor operation, and reduced bus or transformer sizing requirements in new installations or retrofits. The result is a tangible reduction in maintenance interventions and improved system lifetime for critical water and wastewater infrastructure. The solution is specifically tailored for LV AC pumps, enabling reliable operation even with fluctuating loads and high-duty cycles common in pumping stations. In practice, engineers can meet low-harmonic standards without resorting to external multi-pulse arrangements, saving space, time, and capital while accelerating project timelines. Long-term benefits include smoother grid interaction and easier audit trails for compliance reporting and asset management.

FAQs

This wall-mounted LV AC drive ships standard in an IP21 enclosure, suitable for indoor electrical rooms and sheltered spaces. For harsher environments or outdoor-adjacent installations, IP55 mounting units are available, providing enhanced protection against dust and water ingress. When planning installation, consider cabinet ventilation, short-circuit protection, and accessible reset points to ensure reliable start-up and easy maintenance.
THDi below 3% significantly reduces harmonic currents that typically cause extra heating and inefficiencies in pumps. This improves motor efficiency, reduces electrical losses, and can extend motor life. In municipal or industrial water deployments with variable flow, the low-harmonic drive helps meet grid-code requirements, minimizes filter requirements, and lowers operating costs over the pump system’s lifecycle.
Yes. The drive includes built-in pump application features such as sensorless flow calculation and multipump control, enabling precise flow matching across multiple pumps and reducing the need for external sensors. This capability simplifies control strategies in multi-pump installations and supports efficient water distribution with closed-loop feedback and soft-start behavior.
Commissioning is streamlined via a user-friendly Hand-Off-Auto control panel and the Drive Composer PC tool, which support parameterization, fault diagnosis, and performance monitoring. An optional Bluetooth-enabled control panel provides wireless access for field technicians, accelerating commissioning and on-site adjustments while maintaining a clear audit trail for maintenance and operator training.
Key protections include dry run protection and quick ramping to prevent pump damage during start-up, suspension, or load changes. The integrated low-harmonic filter reduces external components and maintenance complexity, while sensorless control minimizes sensor wear. Overall, these features deliver higher reliability, easier maintenance planning, and a lower total cost of ownership for water/wastewater pumping assets.
